What we look for in our people

To thrive at ED&F Man, you’ve got to be agile and be able to take a global perspective. You’ll be keen to develop trust and long-term relationships with your customers, colleagues and suppliers, and work with others to meet our corporate responsibility and commercial goals.

We want entrepreneurially minded people with ambition and determination – and a sense of humour helps. We’re employee-owned so you’ll have a direct influence on our success. If you have ideas to grow our business, we’ll give you the backing and opportunity to make it happen.

Why choose us?

You’ll embrace your entrepreneurial spirit
If you have an idea that will grow our business, you will be encouraged make it happen. Whether you want to help farmers improve their yields, take a product into a new country or help a customer solve a problem with a financial service, you’ll be in the driving seat. So if you can think globally and generate ideas to make our business better, you’ll earn our support.

You’ll make great connections worldwide
We’re the crucial link between farmers and producers and their markets. That’s why we have people in over 60 countries who know their market inside out. So you could find yourself working with a Ugandan coffee trader, a Philippine sugar merchant or an equities broker from London. We value smart, talented people from all backgrounds.

You’ll join a partnership culture
Working here feels different. We’re a global organisation that encourages everyone in the company to take the initiative and make an impact – you will not just be a 'cog in a large machine'. We help each other reach our potential. ED&F Man’s employees hold the majority of our shares; it’s your business. We encourage our people to respect each other, listen and ask questions, and help each other succeed – your efforts will directly benefit you and the people you work with.

Graduate programme

If you’re starting your life in the commercial world, our graduate programme will give you the strongest foundation for your future trading or broking career. Over 18 months we will help you develop an in-depth understanding of end-to-end commercial processes and our business, so you can become the most successful you can be.

By the end of your programme you’ll be trading commodities – coffee, sugar, molasses, grains or pulses – or working on a brokerage desk in our financial services team.

We are no longer recruiting for 2017; we will advertise our 2018 roles in October.

Where you could work

You will be based in one of our worldwide locations – from the start of your programme you will be based here and take a hands-on role. For our 2017 programme we recruited for the following locations:

  • Chicago
  • Singapore
  • New York
  • Shanghai
  • Mumbai
  • Kampala
  • Kabupaten, Indonesia
  • Mexico City
  • London
  • New Orleans

You will also have an overseas assignment in one of the many places we do business – you could work with farmers in our origin markets or trade in a major financial hub.

Your training

In your first year you will visit our origin countries and undergo assignments to:

  • analyse trends and predict markets
  • master supply chain documents and import/export regulations
  • understand regulatory frameworks and compliance processes
  • learn to assess and manage risks
  • understand our products and services

We will be looking for the following attributes:

  • Commercially minded: your CV will show that you understand business – if you’ve worked on a commercial project, tell us about it.
  • Experienced at building relationships: show us how you have done this.
  • Flexible to new opportunities: at ED&F Man we are open-minded and support new initiatives.
  • Multilingual: show us your language skills and why you want to work with us.
  • Educated to master’s or degree level, or equivalent: you’ll have a rounded education that shows a flair for numbers, finance and economics, and a passion for a broader subject – perhaps you’ve studied agribusiness, supply chains or engineering?
