Role Overview
We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join us as a Sustainability Engagement Manager North America to work in a truly global environment. The position will translate Volcafe’s global sustainability strategy into sustainability focused customer-oriented offerings that support our commercial team, strengthen customer relationships and directly enable P&L generation in both origin and destination locations.

Volcafe works across the whole green coffee supply chain to make coffee business better, together with our partners and employees. We have built and operate sustainable coffee supply chains across all our origins, addressing key economic, social and environmental issues in coffee farming communities. Our Volcafe Way farmer support programme engages with thousands of coffee farmers and provides a holistic response to the challenges they face.
This role will be based at our office locations in either San Jose, CR or Bogota, Colombia.
We are part of Hartree Partners, LP a leading global merchant commodities firm facilitating the flow of energy, metals, agriculture, and environmental products across the full commodity supply chain, connecting producers and consumers. Hartree was founded in 1997, is jointly owned by senior management and funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management, LP, and employs around 5,000 individuals worldwide.
Key Accountabilities:
- Support trade strategy by developing customer-oriented marketing programmes aligned with roasters’ needs, including ready-to-sell coffees, sustainability projects, traceability solutions and value-added offerings.
- Produce high-quality customer-facing materials, including website content, presentations, one-pagers, programme documentation and sales collateral to support business development and customer engagement.
- Translate complex sustainability topics, including traceability, impact data and origin stories, into clear, compelling customer benefits that strengthen commercial propositions.
- Develop and deliver tailored communication kits adapted to different customer segments, regions and market requirements, ensuring consistency across global markets.
- Lead sustainability and impact storytelling by transforming sustainability data, project outcomes and origin insights into engaging, customer-ready communications.
- Collaborate closely with commercial, sustainability, digital and content teams to ensure consistent messaging and effective communication of sustainability initiatives and measurable impact.
- Support the development, implementation and ongoing management of the global CRM by leading the sustainability aspects of customer engagement and adoption.
- Conduct customer segmentation and maintain sustainability-related customer data to enable targeted communications and informed commercial decision-making.
- Develop and execute lead generation campaigns that promote sustainability offerings and support business growth and customer acquisition.
- Identify and coordinate opportunities for match funding and sustainability partnerships that enhance customer value propositions and support commercial objectives.
- Deliver structured sustainability insights from origin to customer, working closely with origin teams and customer engagement colleagues to strengthen customer relationships and sales opportunities.
- Support the development of strategies, tools and customer offerings that meet the specific needs of key markets and priority customers.
- Monitor customer engagement, feedback and sustainability programme performance to support continuous improvement and contribute to increased adoption of Volcafe Verified, Volcafe Excellence and sustainability projects.
- Build strong cross-functional relationships across sustainability, commercial and origin teams to ensure timely, consistent and high-quality customer communications and sales support.
Skills and Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in sustainability, business development, customer engagement or marketing, preferably within coffee, soft commodities, smallholder agriculture or related sectors.
- Strong understanding of sustainability principles and experience communicating environmental and social impact to commercial audiences.
- Proven ability to translate complex technical topics, including sustainability frameworks, traceability and impact data, into clear, compelling customer value propositions.
- Experience supporting business development through the creation of customer-focused proposals, presentations, sales materials and marketing programmes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop engaging storytelling and content that supports customer acquisition, retention and commercial growth.
- Strong experience working cross-functionally with commercial, sustainability, origin and marketing teams in a global, matrix organisation.
- Experience using CRM systems to support customer engagement, segmentation, lead generation and targeted communication strategies.
- Highly skilled in structuring content and developing clear, visually engaging presentations, communication materials and customer-facing documentation.
- Ability to simplify complex information into concise, customer-friendly messaging tailored to different customer segments and market needs.
- Strong organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate stakeholders and deliver high-quality outputs to tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach, strong stakeholder management capabilities and exceptional attention to detail.
